The Sierra Nevada mountains is a snowy mountain region found in the state of California in the United States of America. A few parts of the Sierra Nevada mountain range even overlap into the neighboring state of Nevada.

The Sierra Nevada mountains stretches out to an astounding 400 miles, roughly 650 kilometers, starting from Fredonyer Pass up north, all the way to Tehachapi Pass down south. The Sierra Nevada mountains reaches up to California’s Central Valley out west and the Great Basin on the east.

In the west and east cross section of the mountain range, the Sierra Nevada mountains resembles the shape of a trapdoor. Its elevated area gradually increases in the west slope, and its east slope forms a very steep escarpment. This is why the crest of the mountain range runs along the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada. There are rivers that flow west from the Sierra Nevada’s Crest that eventually drain into the Pacific Ocean, and some other rivers that drain east and flow into the Great Basin, where the water does not reach the ocean.

The Sierra Nevada is home to the famous Lake Tahoe, which is a large freshwater lake in the northern area, where the elevation reaches 6,225 feet or 1,897 meters. Lake Tahoe occupies an area of 191 square miles, and lies between the main Sierra Range and Carson Range, which is a spur of the Sierra.
